Here are 10 good reasons to use Biodress compost
Biodress has been working closely with the Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP) who recognise that compost "is an extremely versatile product that can improve the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the soil." Here are some of the benefits of choosing a quality compost such as Biodress:
- 1. Quality and consistency. Not all compost is alike, Biodress is compliant with PAS100 (Publicly Available Specification) and quality is ensured through our in-house testing facility.
- 2. Helps soil retain moisture. Moisture is held for longer in soils with a high organic content, meaning you have to water it less.
- 3. Improves soil condition. Landscaping often takes place in areas where soil quality is poor, yet modern plants need a high level of organic matter to establish quickly - this can't be provided by fertiliser alone. Compost can boost the physical condition of the soil, allowing better root penetration and improved air flow.
- 4. When used as a mulch, it helps prevent erosion and weeds. On light soils in particular, a layer of compost provides excellent protection from the wind and rain. It also starves weeds of the light they need to flourish.
- 5. Contains valuable micro-organisms. Compost boosts the number of soil micro-organisms which, in turn, improves soil structure. Micro-organisms release nutrients in organic matter and make them available to plants to use as food. They can also suppress soil-born plant pathogens.
- 6. Reduces the need for inorganic additives. Nutrients found in compost can mean, in most cases, that adding additional phosphate or potassium is no longer necessary. Whilst a nitrogen supplement may still be necessary, this will be at a far reduced rate.
- 7. Can speed germination. Because of its dark colour, compost absorbs heat from the sun which improves conditions for germination and growth.
- 8. Cost benefits. Using compost can save time and money, this includes reduced need for fertilisers, reduced watering costs and less money spent on plant replacement.
- 9. Protects the peat bogs. Although peat has been cut and used as a fuel for many centuries, this is very different from modern, industrialised extraction to supply gardeners, which damages whole bogs. More than 90% of the bogs in England have been destroyed and there is now heavy extraction in Eastern Europe where more than 90,000 tonnes per year is removed.
- 10. Supports recycling. Biodress compost is made from 100% recycled green matter. Our topsoil, which we blend with Biodress compost, is also a high quality natural material.
